Bambara finds disturbing the fact that the dominant media are controlled by white corporations and thus are in no position to challenge what she sees as the following destructive binaries: “We are ordained/You are damned”; “We make history/You make dinner”; “We speak/You listen”; “We are rational/You are superstitious, childlike (as in minor)”; “We are truly human/You are grotesques . . ” The rest of the essay assesses what Bambara sees as “the complex of longing, irony, and insistence” that describes blacks’ “angular” relationship to America.

Beyond that, the couple no longer will concern themselves with becoming informed spectators of daily events. They not only lose the dream to participate in the world, but they also lose interest in keeping abreast of it. Their there’snothing-we-can-do attitude becomes, by the end of the novel, an I-don’t-want-to-know-aboutthe-things-that-there’s-nothing-I-can-do-about way of life. Here we see that in addition to refusing to fulfill their dreams, they refuse to dream. Frequently potential opportunities are lost not because of circumstance but because of the failure of a character to follow through on something that he or she may or may not want.
