The United States has experienced a decline in religious observance and increased secularization partly as a consequence of expanding rational education, industrialization, consumer cultures, self-seeking pleasure principles. It is only after the late 19th century that equality has been associated with negative connotations such as sameness, conformity, and homogeneity.
